First-generation students, who don't have a family history of higher education, are a group that makes UW Tacoma a very special place. Read their stories as they tell, in their own words, about the challenges they overcame on their path to success.

Fatima Al-Kinani, UW Tacoma first-generation student. What does being First Gen mean to you?
To me, being First Gen means to break through and clear the road for others.

What challenges have you experienced?
My biggest challenge is myself and thinking I am not good enough.

What strengths do you draw upon to persist?
A memory from high school: during my senior year as a new immigrant, I didn’t know what SATs were and when I asked one of my teachers, his response was, “Don’t worry, you will not have to worry about that.”

Who supports you?
My family. It has been a family effort but especially my mother and my 14-year-old daughter.

What’s your major?
I am a senior with a major in social welfare.

What advice do you have for other First Generation UWT students?
Follow no trends.
