The P-12 Educator study area prepares and strengthens P-12 practitioner orientation and engagement with disrupting structural inequalities in schools, districts, and related educational organizations to transform institutional approaches to curriculum, teaching, student, family, and community engagement, and leadership. This study area is for teacher leaders, principals, central office administrators, as well as private educational roles. The superintendent/program administrator credential is for educators with principal or program administrator certification who wish to become certified as a district superintendent.
Those who have already earned this certificate may apply for the advanced standing program option. The Advanced Standing Program Option would allow students credit for knowledge and skills gained in addition to those they will acquire in the Ed.D. program. Prospective students from states that have “reciprocal certification agreements with Washington State” would also be eligible for the Advanced Standing Program Option. Credits from prior internships may also be applied toward the EdD. Those who will earn the P-12 superintendent credential are required by the state to complete additional competencies, which will require two additional courses.
For admission to the superintendent/program admin credential option in the Ed.D., see the admission requirements webpage: https://www.tacoma.uw.edu/soe/EdD/how-apply.
P-12 candidates must be approved by their employer for support of the community grounded praxis in year two. For other candidates, potential community grounded praxis setting(s) must be identified. You will be advised by faculty on-site selection criteria prior to and after admission.
UW Tacoma School of Education Professional Licensure Disclosure
Thank you for your interest in applying to, or enrolling in, one of the University of Washington Tacoma School of Education (SOE) state certification or licensure programs. Under federal Title IV regulation 34 CFR 668.43(a)(5)(v), institutions are required to disclose "if an educational program is designed to meet educational requirements for a specific professional license or certification that is required for employment in an occupation, or is advertised as meeting such requirements."
All of our certification programs have been designed to meet or exceed Washington state requirements. If you currently reside in a state other than Washington, and continue to live there while enrolled in the program, or plan to work in a state other than Washington after completing a Washington state-approved certificate program with us, we have prepared the following information on other states where 1) the School of Education (SOE) preparation program meets or does not meet the state’s educational requirements. According to federal regulations, the UW Tacoma School of Education can enroll students from states where the program does not meet educational requirements only if they attest at the time of enrollment that they intend to move to work in a specific state where the program satisfies educational requirements.
This information is accurate as of September 30, 2024. We will review and update this information annually.

Coursework
Coursework includes courses on leadership, specialty courses for the three study areas, and courses in research and inquiry.
Year-Two Community Grounded Praxis
During the second year of study, you will participate in a community grounded praxis for leadership development that is directly related to the context of your employment, or a related site. We will assist you to design community grounded praxis activities that will expand your leadership capacity beyond that of your current knowledge and skill.
Year-Three Dissertation in Practice
The Dissertation in Practice is the culmination of the EdD Program, a practice-oriented doctoral program. Reflective of doctoral level study, the DiP is an intensive application of a field-based analysis and/or implementation of a structural change project related to the EdD student learning goals. The dissertation typically requires scholarly inquiry that reflects sustained thinking around a theoretical framework, literature-based problem, and related set of activities (e.g., program implementation or applied research methods) that are documented in the form of a written dissertation in practice. Each student conducts the DiP under the guidance of a supervisory committee which approves the completed dissertation, and with support of program faculty through a dissertation seminar. Graduation and conferral of the Educational Leadership doctorate is dependent upon DiP approval by the supervisory committee.
