The Reimagining Campus Safety Advisory Committee will ensure that the good work of this Task Force continues while also addressing concerns about police presence and interactions on our campus. The Committee is not empowered to change or modify state law, University Ordinance, contracts with duly recognized bargaining units, or Department policies and procedures. If, in the judgment of the Committee, changes in policies or procedures are necessary, it is the responsibility of the Committee to recommend such to the Chancellor of the University of Washington Tacoma and/or the President of the University of Washington.
Specifically, the committee will:
- Review campus policies and practices with a focus on transparency, enhancing community policing, and ensuring mechanisms are in place that prevent potential bias.
- Recommend revisions and updates to, or elimination of campus policies.
- Advise the Chancellor on trends, developments or national best practices that could support and enhance a safe, supportive, and welcoming culture on campus.
- Meet quarterly with the Chancellor to discuss issues, concerns, and progress on our commitment to action regarding the decriminalization of the UW Tacoma campus.
- Submit a brief annual report to the Chancellor of the University of Washington Tacoma, summarizing the work of the Advisory Committee, as well as any observations, concerns, or future plans.
