About the Sensory Friendly Space
The idea to create the sensory friendly space in the Tioga Library Building classroom 115 came from a collaboration between librarians and iSchool graduate students working at the Library in 2023-2024. The intention is to provide a space with lower sensory inputs as well as provide fidgets and space for stimming. Initially offered for limited hours a day or two a week, the space is now available with regular weekday afternoon and evening hours based on the feedback of UWT students.
Where is the sensory friendly space?
Tioga Library Building room 115. See building maps and more information about visiting the Library.
When is the space available?
From 4:00 to 8:00 pm every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday that the Library is open. See all Library hours.
Who is the space for?
All members of the UWT community interested in a quiet and comfortable space with dimmed lights, and sensory friendly accessories including fidgets, coloring supplies, and a variety of seating.
How does it work?
- Come in during sensory-friendly hours
- Use the accessories and seating options you prefer
- Be conscious of noise volume and the differing sensory needs of others
- Place library items back when you are finished
- Provide feedback if there is anything you’d like to see!
Why is this a thing?
Individuals with sensory processing differences or sensitivities, and those who are neurodivergent may find a space without overwhelming stimuli beneficial to their studying, work, or downtime. The sensory friendly space at the UWT Library joins other similar initiatives in libraries to create a genuine space of joy, respite, and belonging for our community.
