Changes to S. 19th Street starting the week of March 23
The City of Tacoma has approved the vacation of two street segments to the University of Washington Tacoma:
- S. 19th Street between Jefferson Avenue and Market Street
- Court C between S. 17th Street and Jefferson Avenue
A street vacation means the City has transferred the public street right-of-way to the University. As a result, the University of Washington Tacoma will now own and manage these former street segments as part of the campus.
As part of this transition, the following changes will be implemented over Spring Break:
- Closure of the vacated portion of S. 19th Street between Jefferson Avenue and Market Street to vehicles. Pedestrians can still use the sidewalks along S. 19th Street to access campus.
- Temporary lane changes at the intersection of S. 19th Street and Market Street to accommodate the closure and maintain traffic flow.
Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians should use caution in the area and follow posted signage and traffic control directions.
Additional permanent changes will be implemented as these areas are integrated into the campus. This will include University parking controls on Court C, along with other campus-related improvements and management of the space. The Court 17 garage will remain accessible from Court C.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as these changes are implemented.
