SET Faculty Recognized at Research Showcase

The University of Washington Tacoma School of Engineering & Technology (SET) hosted its first annual Research Showcase in an effort to build a culture of innovation by stimulating collaborations through networking among SET faculty and external collaborators.  External partners included individuals from Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center, Madigan Army Medical Center and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Keyport, among others.

“The goal of the showcase was to provide access to research programs that could have a transformational impact on students and the SET community, as well as to embrace innovation that could drive economic development through entrepreneurship,” said Ka Yee Yeung, Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Innovation.

This year, 26 research projects were presented by faculty and students that tackled a wide variety of techniques across engineering and technology, including machine learning, data science, and cloud computing, with applications in environmental sciences, health, parking, mobile sensors and many others.

Jeff Walters, Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering, was awarded for his and his colleagues’ work, “Challenges and Solutions to Rural Water Service Sustainability: A Systems Scaffolding Approach.”

“It means a great deal to me to know that my peers like the research that I do, especially as I endeavor to increase the scope and impact of my work by leveraging the knowledge and skills of so many great academics within and outside of SET,” said Walters. “My small but mighty team of civil engineering faculty is seeking to build a program that is decidedly focused on systems-level infrastructure solutions to urban challenges. Receiving accolades about my research focus and trajectory signals to me that there exists fertile soil from which to grow a truly cross-disciplinary consortium of faculty who work together to target these challenges.”
