Meet the UW Tacoma's student leaders and staff who make up the Husky Success team.
“I was born and raised in Australia and always knew I wanted to travel and see the world. I began my journey by studying for my undergraduate degree in both Hawaii and North Carolina. After graduating I worked with the Education Channel in Florida. I attended Graduate School first in Italy and then New York. I lived in Italy for two years and while there I worked with American Students and led them on educational tours from Rome to Paris to London. After continuing my journey to the Pacific Northwest I worked with international students at Tacoma Community College and now call the University of Washington home working with undergraduate academic advising as an academic counselor. My favorite places to visit are Denmark, Scotland and France. My motto? A smile is worth a thousand words."
Hello! My name is Trevor Owens, I am the Director of Operations here at the Husky Success Series as well as a Student Advising Mentor for University Academic Advising. I am currently in my third year here at UWT pursuing a degree in Business Administration. I thoroughly enjoy the smell of oranges and other citrus things alike. I’m always looking for new music so if you have any recommendations feel free to share! Hope to see y'all at our next event!
Hello Hello! My name is Laila Markland (she/they) and I’m the program coordinator for Take Care Tuesdays. I’m a current sophomore majoring in psychology, and I joined the HSS team recently in October 2023. I’m very passionate about understanding psychology in a way that isn’t rooted in western medicine, and normalizing conversations surrounding mental health; something all humans deal with in different capacities. I love to read, travel, dance, and one of my favorite pastimes is going to concerts when I’m able! If you have any questions about Take Care Tuesdays, or if you have any ideas on programs you might want to see- please reach out, I’d love to hear from you!
"Hey Huskies! I am a current junior pursuing Communications. I am currently working as the ASUWT Director of University Affairs. A few of my passions include helping my fellow huskies, learning new things, and cooking. I was born in Pennsylvania but raised in Seattle, Washington. If you see me on campus, feel free to reach out and ask any questions that you might have."
"My name is Toan Nguyen, and I am currently a junior/soon-to-be-senior majoring in Computer Science and Systems. I am working for the University Academic Advising as a Student Advising Mentor. As a Computer Science major, I think it is easy to guess that my passion is coding. I used to participate in a lot of programming contests. Back in Vietnam, I competed in the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Vietnam National Round and qualified for the Asia Pacific level (the last round before the World Final.) Here at UW Tacoma, I participated in the ICPC Pacific Northwest and ranked 4th in Washington state, 23rd in total standing. Feel free to contact me if you want to learn more about competitive programming or have questions about registration tools and campus resources here at UW Tacoma."
"Hi! My name is Kara Peterson and I am a senior in the Biomedical Science major here at UW Tacoma. I am also Chair of the UWT's Student Activities Board, which I have been a part of since July 2021. I hope once I graduate to go into the field of forensic science and work as a lab assistant. Some of my hobbies include hanging out with my pets (two guinea pigs named Luna and Snickerdoodle (aka "the do") and a cat named Dusk), going for walks and listening to music, binging TV shows, drawing and painting, baking, and hanging out and playing video games with my husband Andrew. I also love to collect things such as snowglobes and hats."
"Greetings and salutations! I am currently attending the University of Washington Tacoma as a Social Welfare major with an interest in neurodiversity within academia. I work on campus as a Student Office Assistant for the University Academic Advising office. I truly believe that "education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it" - Marian Wright Edelman. My hobbies include artsy stuff, but I also love Tim Burton movies and window shopping in downtown Olympia. My zodiac sign is Virgo, and my moon and rising signs are both Cancer. I am delighted to be on the Husky Success Series team and helping my fellow husky-pups through their academic journey!"
"Hiya Huskies! I am a junior pursuing a degree in Psychology at UW Tacoma. I am currently working as an OGA Fellow promoting global learning opportunities and working to grow an inclusive community for international and domestic students. In my downtime I enjoy traveling, cooking, painting, and watching movies with my dog. If you have any questions, concerns, or just want to chat, feel free to reach out! You can catch me running around campus or eating a sandwich."
"My name is Jenny Jiang. I am currently a sophomore that is majoring in Biomedical Sciences. I work in the Student Office Assistant position in the University Academic Advising office. For a while I was a part of the Asian American Pacific Islander RSO and RISE Scholars Program, and I thoroughly enjoyed my experiences with both groups. My career goal is to become an anesthesiologist, but with that said there’s still a long way to go until I get there. Some of my hobbies include knitting, hiking, making tea, planting, reading, and enjoying a great board game night with my friends and family."
Hey y’all! My name is Catherine Rawlings (she/her). I am a sophomore majoring in environmental sustainability with a focus in policy and law, and minoring in global engagement. I am a Pack Advisor for the Student Transition & Success Office, supporting incoming students’ transition to UWT through orientation. In my first year, I was a RISE Scholar, and I enjoyed the experience and friends I made through the program. I enjoy cooking, traveling, singing, hanging out with friends, being with my dog, and helping others. On campus, you can find me chilling in the STS office or the CEI. Feel free to ask me questions or chat with me if you see me on campus.
