Coming together in gratitude this Memorial Day
The University of Washington Tacoma is honored to support a large military-connected community that includes veterans, active-duty service members, spouses and children of military personnel, and Gold Star families whose loved ones died while serving in active conflicts. On Memorial Day (May 25), we pause to honor and thank our military service members who lost their lives in the line of duty.
This year, I encourage you to take a reflective walk along the Grand Staircase, where American flags will line the Prairie Line Trail through campus beginning this Friday. These flags will be planted by UW Tacoma’s Veterans & Military Resource Center and our military community members. They commemorate the sacrifices made in service of our country by generations of South Sound personnel.
Please join the Veterans & Military Resource Center (VMRC) in honoring those we’ve lost by participating in special tri-campus programming this month, including these local events:
Paws With Cause: Paint Shelter Pets
Tuesday, May 19, noon–1:30 p.m.
Paint portraits of local shelter animals while learning more about shelter animal advocacy and community wellness from Paws With Cause. This workshop will take place in the Dawg House and is sponsored in part by Washington State Arts for Wellness: Arts in the Military.
Wear Blue: Run to Remember

Join people across the country who are running or walking in self-paced Memorial Miles to honor the fallen. Participants are encouraged to wear blue during their activities, including a bib that you can pick up for free at the Veteran and Military Resource Center in TLB 307A.
