On the move?
We can help!
When a move is initiated centrally, by campus leadership via Facilities, the process will be managed by UWT Facilities Space Planning.
When a move is initiated internally, such as a department reassigning office space within an already allocated footprint, Facilities Space Planning should be notified of the updated occupancy.
When you or your department are relocating, there is a lot to keep track of. Use the guidelines and checklist below to help make your move as smooth as possible.

All campus space is owned by the UW Tacoma Chancellor’s Office and is not the property of any department. Assignment of space is based on priorities that are reflective of UWT's mission as prioritized by the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). Vacated space is returned to the general campus inventory for reassignment by the chancellor through the appropriate process.
Facilities Management is responsible for the management of this limited and finite resource. Facilities provides space planning and strategic analysis of campus space to ensure an efficient and equitable allocation and the highest and best use of space to support the University’s mission, goals and objectives.
Space Requests and Project Initiation
If you are planning to change how a campus space is used - or make any physical changes to a space - please review the following guidance to determine whether your project requires a formal Space Request or a Facilities Work Request.
We encourage all faculty and staff to consult early with Facilities to avoid delays, reduce costs, and ensure projects are safe, code-compliant, and aligned with campus priorities.
What is a Space Request?
A Space Request is required when your project includes any of the following:
- A major alteration or remodel of existing space
- A change in the use or function of the space (e.g., converting office space into a lab)
- Acquisition of equipment or furniture that triggers utility changes, ventilation upgrades, structural review, or other building system modifications
- Reallocation of space among academic or administrative units
- Assignment of space for grant-funded research, programming, or staffing
- Long-term use of space by an off-campus group or partner
- Temporary or permanent relocation of a campus unit or function due to construction or renovation
All Space Requests must be submitted by a Vice Chancellor and approved through the campus space governance process prior to modifying or occupying space.
Examples of Projects That Require a Space Request
- Installing a wind tunnel or other lab equipment that needs new power or structural assessment
- Creating or modifying wet labs, clean rooms, or fabrication spaces
- Repurposing shared workspaces, lounges, or classrooms for specialized programs
- Moving an entire department to a new location on campus
- Renovating space to support a new research initiative with external partners
When in Doubt — Submit a Facilities Work Request
Not sure if your idea requires a Space Request? No problem.
Start by submitting a Facilities Service Request.
Our team will assess the scope and help determine whether additional approvals or governance steps are needed.
This early step ensures:
• Your project is reviewed for safety, code compliance, and feasibility
• Campus leadership is informed and involved appropriately
• Time and effort aren't spent on unapproved or non-viable work
Collaborate Early, Build Better
Whether you're expanding a lab, upgrading equipment, or rearranging furniture in a shared space - early coordination with Facilities ensures a smoother, safer, and more efficient project delivery process.
