The UW Tacoma School of Education Merit Scholarship is a tuition-based fund to be paid towards quarterly tuition only. Any additional tuition-based funding received by the student may nullify or reduce disbursement of this scholarship. Students who are currently enrolled in a School of Education (SoE) graduate program may apply for a merit based scholarship that would be applied in Winter and Spring quarters

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA
1. Scholarships should be made to currently enrolled SoE graduate students who will attend UWT in the quarters the scholarship is awarded (Winter 2023 & Spring 2023).
2. Scholarships are awarded only to tuition-paying students (regardless of whether tuition is paid personally, through financial aid, or other means). In-state, out-of-state, and international students who pay tuition are eligible for scholarships. Tuition-exempt students are eligible for quarters (winter and/or spring 2023) in which they will owe a tuition balance.
3. Students who meet the following criteria are eligible for this scholarship**:
a. Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program at UW Tacoma in the quarters the scholarship is awarded
b. Are in good academic standing with a minimum graduate GPA of 3.3
c. Have demonstrated sustained academic excellence or shown academic improvement over time.
**Students receiving full benefits are not eligible for this scholarship (i.e., VA, tuition exemption; as mentioned above in #2).
Project TELL Equity Scholarship
The School of Education faculty member, Dr. Belinda Louie has received a multi-year federal grant to train teacher candidates to work with English language learners.
Up to $5,000 in tuition support (total and over two quarters) may be available for each student accepted into the Master of Education K-8 with English Language Learners (ELL) teacher certification program. The tuition support award is contingent on passing the WEST-E exam.
Students are admitted for Summer Quarter only. The application deadline for admission to the K-8 with English Language Learners Teacher Certification Program is February 17, 2023. Click here for more information regarding how to apply.
The award for tuition support will be split between spring and summer quarters 2024 for each student that completes all the following requirements:
- Pass the ELL WEST-E by February 1, 2024
- Successfully pass all required ELL Endorsement coursework through autumn quarter 2023

Patti Banks Endowed Fellowship

Fellowship Opportunities
The Office of Student Fellowships & Awards supports UW Tacoma students in their applications for competitive institutional, national, and international fellowships. What is the Martinez Fellowship Program?
The Martinez Fellowship Program is TAF's program for early career BIPOC educator support. Our goal is to ensure teachers of color enter the education field and have long thriving careers. The rewards of teaching are endless, but the challenges are also real. The Martinez Fellowship provides a support community, ongoing professional development, and ongoing networking opportunities, all of which are grounded in racial identity development to support Fellows as they navigate the transition from a teacher preparation program to their own classroom.

Applicants must:
•Be a college student in Pierce County completing your senior year or having received verification for student teaching.

•Be a resident of Pierce County

Douglas & Belinda Louie Fellowship

The University of Washington Tacoma School of Education offers this scholarship for a graduate student enrolled in or applying for the Teacher Certification Program to obtain an initial teaching certification. Students from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.

Neil D Prescott-Student Teaching / Internship Scholarship
The Washington State School Retirees' Association (WSSRA) invites prospective teachers and other educators in their final year of college preparation to apply for the Neil D. Prescott Scholarship. This one-time scholarship is awarded to students who will be student teaching or conducting an internship during the 2023-2024 academic year. Sixteen scholarships (eight $3,000 awards and eight $1,000 awards distributed across the eight WSSRA regions) will be awarded.
In addition, in each of WSSRA's eight regions, local WSSRA units may award additional scholarships.
Applicants Must:
(1) Be presently enrolled in a college of education in Washington State pursuing a career in education, (2) be committed to securing employment in a school district in the state, and (3) will conduct student teaching or an internship during the 2023-24 academic year.
2023-24 student teachers are encouraged to apply.
In addition, those planning to complete an internship as a counselor, physical or occupational therapist, social worker, or school psychologist and who are not currently employed in K12 schools, may apply in 2023-24.
Exception: A currently employed paraprofessional who is enrolled in a teacher preparation program who plans to student teach in 2023-24 is eligible to apply.
NEIL D. PRESCOTT STUDENT TEACHING/INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
Robert J. Handy/WSSR Foundation/Gene Forrester Memorial Scholarships
Due March 1, 2023
The Washington State School Retirees' Association (WSSRA) invites high school seniors to apply for the Robert J. Handy and WSSR Foundation scholarships. These awards are given to students who plan to pursue a career in education.
Statewide sixteen (16) WSSR – Foundation Scholarships and sixteen (16) PEMCO/ Robert J. Handy Scholarships will be awarded to students whose degree would be in one of these areas: teacher, counselor, speech therapist, occupational therapist, social worker or school psychologist. For the WSSR-Foundation, one $3,000 award and one $1,000 award will be granted in each of the eight WSSRA regions. For Handy, two $900 scholarships (redeemable for four years) will be awarded in each of the eight WSSRA regions by PEMCO.
In addition, two (2) Gene Forrester Memorial Scholarships at $2,000 each will be awarded to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and who will major in Agricultural Education at Washington State University.
Also, in each of WSSRA's eight regions, local WSSRA units may award additional scholarships.
WSSRA collects and distributes applications to readers in our eight regions who will select the recipients. Applicants will be notified by May 15, 2023, if they have been chosen.
Washington Student Achievement Council
The Washington State Educator Workforce Program (EWP) provides financial aid to attract and retain teachers to work in subjects or locations of high need known as shortage areas. EWP includes options for current teachers, student teachers, paraprofessionals, and non-educators hoping to move into the teaching field. Most are conditional scholarships that encourage individuals to pursue teaching in subjects or locations of high need, also known as "Shortage Areas," in return for funding received.
TEACH Grant Program
The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides federal grants of up to $4000 per year, for a maximum of $8,000. In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students. As a recipient of a TEACH Grant, you must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant.

Dr. Connie M. Reece is a beloved mother who always goes the extra mile to help others, making a lasting impact on thousands of students.
Dr. Reece is a single mother who taught in prisons, inner-city schools, and online to help struggling students graduate. Wherever she feels that she is needed, she goes. Dr. Reece is a lifelong learner who is passionate about helping those in need and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.
This scholarship aims to continue the legacy of Dr. Reece by supporting budding teachers who will educate the next generation.
Any low-income undergraduate or graduate student pursuing teaching or education may apply for this scholarship.

The Edward G. and Helen A. Borgens Elementary Teacher Scholarship is a one-time preferred amount of up to $1,500 awarded to one student who is twenty-five (25) years of age or older. Applicants must be studying to teach at the elementary school level. Applicants must have at least a 3.5 GPA, be at least a college sophomore, and attend or plan on attending an accredited college or university. The award is based on academic merit and is not automatically renewable, however, recipients may reapply for consideration as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.

Edward G. and Helen A. Borgens Secondary Teacher Scholarship
The Edward G. and Helen A. Borgens Secondary Teacher Scholarship is a one-time preferred amount of up to $1,500 awarded to one student who is twenty-five (25) years of age or older. Applicants must be studying to teach at the secondary school level. Applicants must have at least a 3.5 GPA, be at least a college sophomore, and attend or plan on attending an accredited college or university. The award is based on academic merit and is not automatically renewable, however, recipients may reapply for consideration as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.

SCHOLARSHIP OVERVIEW: Teacher.org will post a question and entry form for candidates to fill out. The form(s) will be found on all applicable Teacher.org pages. Candidates will answer the question with a response of 500 - 700 words. Teacher.org will pick one winner with the best answer among all entrants. Entrants can only apply to one Teacher.org scholarship.

CONTEST DURATION: This contest ends on the night of April 1st, 2023 at 11:59pm PST. Once the deadline has passed, no further entries for the contest will be accepted. Teacher.org will announce the winner via personal email to the entrant, on social media, and/or its website within two weeks of the end date of the contest. Teacher.org reserves the right to change any beginning or end dates of the Contest. Note: This is an annual scholarship.
PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY: The Contest is open to (1) any college student pursuing a degree in education as named above anywhere in the world (2) who is at least 18 years of age, (3) currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, as listed on the U.S. Department of Education website, available at http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.aspx or its equivalent in countries outside the U.S.(4) with a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, and (4) who completes the entry form on Teacher.org. The contest is void where prohibited by law. Entries must be from individuals only; groups, organizations, and multiple-party entries are not eligible. The Contest is governed by United States law and is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Employees of Teacher.org, its affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising, promotion and fulfillment agencies, judges, and members of the immediate family or household of each are not eligible. Immediate family members include parents, siblings or any person residing in the same household as employee.
ENTRY: Entrants must go to www.teacher.org to fill out the entry form and answer the question in the space allotted with a 500-700 word response. The answer must be original and must have been created by the entrant; entries that plagiarize the work of others will be disqualified. Teacher.org may verify the eligibility of each applicant; if an applicant is found to be ineligible to enter the contest, their entry will be considered invalid. Entrants must fill out all required portions of the entry form to be eligible for consideration.
