Graduate Merit Scholarship Application (Google Form)
The UW Tacoma School of Education Merit Scholarship is a tuition-based fund to be paid towards quarterly tuition only. Any additional tuition-based funding received by the student may nullify or reduce disbursement of this scholarship. Students who are currently enrolled in a School of Education (SoE) graduate program may apply for a merit based scholarship that would be applied in Winter and Spring quarters

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA
1. Scholarships should be made to currently enrolled SoE graduate students who will attend UWT in the quarters the scholarship is awarded (Winter 2023 & Spring 2023).
2. Scholarships are awarded only to tuition-paying students (regardless of whether tuition is paid personally, through financial aid, or other means). In-state, out-of-state, and international students who pay tuition are eligible for scholarships. Tuition-exempt students are eligible for quarters (winter and/or spring 2023) in which they will owe a tuition balance.
3. Students who meet the following criteria are eligible for this scholarship**:
a. Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program at UW Tacoma in the quarters the scholarship is awarded
b. Are in good academic standing with a minimum graduate GPA of 3.3
c. Have demonstrated sustained academic excellence or shown academic improvement over time.
**Students receiving full benefits are not eligible for this scholarship (i.e., VA, tuition exemption; as mentioned above in #2).
Project TELL Equity Scholarship
The School of Education faculty member, Dr. Belinda Louie has received a multi-year federal grant to train teacher candidates to work with English language learners.
Up to $5,000 in tuition support (total and over two quarters) may be available for each student accepted into the Master of Education K-8 with English Language Learners (ELL) teacher certification program. The tuition support award is contingent on passing the WEST-E exam.
Students are admitted for Summer Quarter only. The application deadline for admission to the K-8 with English Language Learners Teacher Certification Program is February 17, 2023. Click here for more information regarding how to apply.
The award for tuition support will be split between spring and summer quarters 2024 for each student that completes all the following requirements:
- Pass the ELL WEST-E by February 1, 2024
- Successfully pass all required ELL Endorsement coursework through autumn quarter 2023

Grants, Scholarships, and Fellowships for Teachers
The Martinez Fellowship Program was established by Holli and Edgar Martinez in 2008. It is managed by the Technology Access Foundation (TAF). The Martinez Fellowship Program supports teachers of color through their teacher preparation program and early career with equity-based coaching, community-building and ongoing professional development to have a significant impact on closing Washington's education opportunity gap by improving teacher diversity and retaining high talent teachers of color. The program is open to 3rd year undergraduates, graduate level students in teaching programs and alternative route programs. Fellows receive early career coaching, ongoing professional development, mentorship and University-sponsored scholarship supports. UW Tacoma's School of Education is an official partner of TAF to support aspiring teachers to attain their dream of becoming public school teacher-leaders.
Martinez Fellows are exceptional teachers and leaders in education. They are committed to the highest standards of professionalism and they strive to excel in the profession of teaching and leadership. Fellows are committed to the success of every student in their classroom. They are passionately committed to social justice in education and eager to engage in an ongoing collaborative learning community with other Fellows. Lastly, Fellows come from various experiences and communities. They come together around their shared passion for teaching; through a multicultural lens, eliminating the opportunity gap in Washington State’s most under-served schools.

Application
The Martinez Fellowship Program is an annual, nonrecurring award for students of color admitted to a graduate-level teacher-preparation program University of Washington School of Education. Scholarship recipients may receive different award amounts. There is no set number of awards given each year. In cooperation with partner universities, some of the scholarship funds awarded to Martinez Fellows come from other sources.
Criteria for Selecting Martinez Fellows:
- Admission to one of UWT's graduate teacher-preparation programs
- Identify as a person of color
- Demonstrate a commitment to social justice
- Willingness to sign a contract agreeing to (1) teach for 3 years in a Washington public school (preferably in a diverse high-needs school) and (2) participate in program professional-development opportunities
- Experience with school-age youth, education, youth development, social services, or related field
- Demonstration of financial need (preferred)
Applications due date coincides with our UWT deadlines.
Qualified applicants will receive more information in winter and spring quarters. Deadline is May 31st
They will be invited for 45-minute interviews with Technology Access Foundation staff, and UWT School of Education program faculty in late April/early May during the late afternoon and evening.

Martinez Fellows Agree to the Following
- Work as an educator in Washington State, preferably in an underserved K-12 public school immediately upon graduation from a teaching program. Fellows must commit to teaching for at least three years, preferably longer.
- Attend and participate in the Annual Martinez Fellowship Summer Summit*.; Attendance is mandatory for first and second year Fellows (unless you are in a two year program, then the first 3 years are mandatory) to ensure support through the first year of teaching.
- Participate in quarterly Saturday Seminars* held throughout the school year. Physical attendance is mandatory for first and second year Fellows. Attendance in the third year and beyond is strongly encouraged; opportunities are available for Fellows to lead Seminar workshops and discussions.
- Contracted Fellows are permitted one absence per year and must submit a request permitting their absence to the Program Manager one month prior to the Seminar date. They may also be asked to complete action items to stay aligned with community learning and progress.
- After the first two years of MFP programming, Fellows who have attended 80% or more of ALL required events will have continued access to the Fellowship community and events. Those who do not attend at least 80% or have not completed any action items to stay aligned to community learning will have the option to pay to attend certain events.
- Serve as a role model as a professional educator and agree to help mentor and collaborate with other Fellows to improve K-1 teaching
- Maintain reasonable communication with the Network for Edwork Team (e.g. responding within 48 hours) to ensure accurate contact and work-site information, including: email address, phone number, home address, district, school, grade/subject.
- Participate in program surveys and/or research inquiries to help TAF learn more about teacher education, teacher effectiveness, and how to shape the Martinez Fellows program.
- Provide permission to TAF to promote Fellows’ names and bios on TAF’s website, in press releases, print brochures, video clips, and by introducing them at sponsored events
Douglas & Belinda Louie Fellowship

Neil D Prescott-Student Teaching / Internship Scholarship
The Washington State School Retirees' Association (WSSRA) invites prospective teachers and other educators in their final year of college preparation to apply for the Neil D. Prescott Scholarship. This one-time scholarship is awarded to students who will be student teaching or conducting an internship during the 2023-2024 academic year. Sixteen scholarships (eight $3,000 awards and eight $1,000 awards distributed across the eight WSSRA regions) will be awarded.
In addition, in each of WSSRA's eight regions, local WSSRA units may award additional scholarships.
Applicants Must:
(1) Be presently enrolled in a college of education in Washington State pursuing a career in education, (2) be committed to securing employment in a school district in the state, and (3) will conduct student teaching or an internship during the 2023-24 academic year.
2023-24 student teachers are encouraged to apply.
In addition, those planning to complete an internship as a counselor, physical or occupational therapist, social worker, or school psychologist and who are not currently employed in K12 schools, may apply in 2023-24.
Exception: A currently employed paraprofessional who is enrolled in a teacher preparation program who plans to student teach in 2023-24 is eligible to apply.
NEIL D. PRESCOTT STUDENT TEACHING/INTERNSHIP SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
Robert J. Handy/WSSR Foundation/Gene Forrester Memorial Scholarships
Due March 1, 2023
The Washington State School Retirees' Association (WSSRA) invites high school seniors to apply for the Robert J. Handy and WSSR Foundation scholarships. These awards are given to students who plan to pursue a career in education.
Statewide sixteen (16) WSSR – Foundation Scholarships and sixteen (16) PEMCO/ Robert J. Handy Scholarships will be awarded to students whose degree would be in one of these areas: teacher, counselor, speech therapist, occupational therapist, social worker or school psychologist. For the WSSR-Foundation, one $3,000 award and one $1,000 award will be granted in each of the eight WSSRA regions. For Handy, two $900 scholarships (redeemable for four years) will be awarded in each of the eight WSSRA regions by PEMCO.
In addition, two (2) Gene Forrester Memorial Scholarships at $2,000 each will be awarded to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and who will major in Agricultural Education at Washington State University.
Also, in each of WSSRA's eight regions, local WSSRA units may award additional scholarships.
WSSRA collects and distributes applications to readers in our eight regions who will select the recipients. Applicants will be notified by May 15, 2023, if they have been chosen.
Washington Student Achievement Council
The Washington State Educator Workforce Program (EWP) provides financial aid to attract and retain teachers to work in subjects or locations of high need known as shortage areas. EWP includes options for current teachers, student teachers, paraprofessionals, and non-educators hoping to move into the teaching field. Most are conditional scholarships that encourage individuals to pursue teaching in subjects or locations of high need, also known as "Shortage Areas," in return for funding received.
TEACH Grant Program
The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides federal grants of up to $4000 per year, for a maximum of $8,000. In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students. As a recipient of a TEACH Grant, you must teach for at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received a TEACH Grant.

WEA-Retired Scholarships is once again offering up to ten $1,000 non-renewable scholarships for 2023 to help WEA members enhance skills for their current position, obtain an endorsement in a new area, or attain/maintain a teaching certificate. These scholarships are available for WEA members only: Certificated, Classified/ESP, SWEA (those currently enrolled in a college or university pursuing a degree in education). The scholarships cannot be used for incurred debt for past classes or reimbursement for pre-paid classes.

Dr. Connie M. Reece is a beloved mother who always goes the extra mile to help others, making a lasting impact on thousands of students.
Dr. Reece is a single mother who taught in prisons, inner-city schools, and online to help struggling students graduate. Wherever she feels that she is needed, she goes. Dr. Reece is a lifelong learner who is passionate about helping those in need and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.
This scholarship aims to continue the legacy of Dr. Reece by supporting budding teachers who will educate the next generation.

Applicants must have at least a 3.5 GPA, be at least a college sophomore, and attend or plan on attending an accredited college or university. The award is based on academic merit and is not automatically renewable, however, recipients may reapply for consideration as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.
