International First-Year Students
International first-year applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Complete the required high school classes, called College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADRs)
- Achieve a 2.7 or higher grade point average
- Proof of English language proficiency
- Submit a complete application with a well-written personal statement and activities log
- $75 international application fee (paid when you submit your application)
International students who do not meet the requirements for first-year admission can consider attending community college first and then transferring to UW Tacoma.
The international freshman application is available online. Please contact the Admissions office with any questions related to your application. International Student Services can assist you with any visa questions you have.
Any admissions requirements, including English language proficiency and final official high school documents (e.g. transcripts, examination results), must be submitted the quarter before starting classes. For example, if an applicant is admitted to Autumn quarter, all official materials must be received by the university by July.
Please note, documents uploaded with your application or sent as PDF documents via email are not considered official. Official documents must be submitted prior to applying for a visa. More information on submitting official transcripts can be found on this page.
International Transfer Students
International transfer applications must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Complete the international transfer application, including personal statement
- Submit transcripts
- Proof of English language proficiency
- $75 international application fee (paid when you submit your application)
The international transfer application is available online. UW Tacoma accepts transfer applications for autumn, winter and spring quarter admission.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Once your application is complete (including transcripts and any other required material), then an application decision is usually given within 8 weeks. Any conditional admissions requirements, e.g., English language proficiency, must be completed at least three months before starting classes.
After your application is submitted
Once your application is complete (including complete high school transcripts and a test score for TOEFL, IELTS, SAT or ACT), an application decision is typically released within 8 weeks. Please contact the Admissions office with any questions.
After you are admitted, you will also need to provide proof of financial resources in order to qualify for your I-20 for F-1 student visa status. Contact the Admissions office with any questions related to your application for admission.
