First-year academics

Your first year, and throughout your time at UW Tacoma, you will be in small classes taught 100 percent by faculty who feel inspired to seek innovative approaches to teaching, have a passion for research and are engaged with the region -- there are no auditorium-style or TA-taught classes. Faculty here believe in a small learning environment, where professors and students all get to know each other in a collaborative, creative learning process.

As part of your general education requirements, your first-year curriculum includes a foundation of core courses with students learning together in small groups. Groups of approximately 25 take four core classes together throughout the year. In addition to the core curriculum, each quarter, students select from a range of elective courses that encourage exploration and preparation for higher-level courses and majors. The first-year core classes count toward the university's general requirements and provide a foundation for achieving overall learning goals of inquiry and critical thinking, communication and self-expression, global perspective-diversity-civic engagement and quantitative literacy.
