Honoring the courage and commitment of our first-generation students
This week marks a cherished tradition for our campus — the National First-Generation College Celebration. Through this event, we join colleges and universities across the country in recognizing the courage and commitment displayed by those who have taken a bold step as the first in their families to pursue higher education.
My experience as a first-generation college graduate has shaped my career and continues to guide me. I understand that this journey comes with unique challenges and uncertainties, but I also know it brings many moments of joy — of discovering your voice, strengthening your purpose, and finding a community where you truly belong.
With more than half of UW Tacoma’s students being the first in their families to attend college or the first to earn a college degree, we are proud to provide them with a welcoming community and a dedicated team in the Office of First Gen to support their success.
Because of our efforts, our university is nationally recognized as a leader in expanding access and opportunity. Last year, UW Tacoma was one of 14 colleges and universities selected to join the inaugural class of FirstGen Forward Network Champions, an exclusive group serving as national leaders and advisors in advancing first-generation efforts.
I hope you'll join us on Friday, November 7, for our National First-Generation College Celebration, where we will unveil the students, faculty, and staff selected to participate in this year's "We Are First Gen" poster series. The stories shared at this gathering make it one of my favorite moments of the school year, and I look forward to seeing you there.
Every first-generation student who reaches for new possibilities, and every first-generation professional who mentors with purpose and care, helps us fulfill UW Tacoma's promise to create opportunity for generations to come.
