The practicum starts with orientation at the beginning of September (specific days depend on coordinating trainees’ schedules; 3 full days/wk are expected just for this period of time) and ends early in June, with the close of the spring quarter. Practicum includes the September orientation plus autumn, winter, and spring quarters. This position is considered voluntary and thus is unpaid and is not benefits-eligible. Practicum trainees are expected to work 20 hours per week, with the exception of Washington State-recognized holidays that fall during their ordinary working days. Trainees may not see clients on holidays.
Absences should be rare and only in the case of illness or personal emergency. If possible and desired, trainees may make up missed hours by rearranging their schedules, but may not see clients outside the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. An absence for the purpose of defending a dissertation is considered professional development. Likewise, PAWS staff provide flexibility around the time of internship selection, recognizing the possibility that trainees may need time away for interviews. Otherwise, all academic activities are expected to be scheduled around the practicum experience. All planned absences require two weeks’ notice and prior approval.
