THANK YOU TO ALL WHO MADE THE CONFERENCE A SUCCESS!
The Institute for Innovation and Global Engagement's 2023 Global Engagement Conference was a tremendous success thanks first and foremost to the dedicated work of our students across the University of Washington Tacoma and Seattle campuses, Pacific Lutheran University, University of Puget Sound, Western Washington University, and Pierce College. Approximately 200 attendees throughout the day brought to our campus the true purpose of the conference: the dynamic exchange of ideas and the excitement of discovery.
.
We especially thank UW Tacoma Tribal Liaison Gabe Minthorn for opening with the land acknowledgement. We are privileged and humbled to live and learn in this land of the Puyallup people.
We thank all our opening speakers for moving speeches. Ms. Deneen Grant delivered an inspiring keynote on the "Power of Transformative Leadership." With examples from giant leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former president of Liberia, she urged students to dream big. Leaders are transformative, not transactional, she said. "We don't inspire by saying, 'I have a plan,' but 'I have a dream!'" Ms. Holly Bamford Hunt emphasized the importance of empathy and collaboration across sectors in our community, and the need for design thinking to bring forward impactful and sustainable solutions.
We recognize UW Tacoma staff in the Office of Events and Conferences, Media Services, the Copy Center, Campus Safety, and Custodial Services, for helping us create a welcoming and efficient conference venue. Our students were well supported by faculty across campuses and especially in the Global Honors Program. The IIGE's Community Advisory Board and Innovation Action Network, and Global Honors Executive Committee members stepped in to serve as respondents, mentors, and engaged audience members for our students' stellar work. We thank Brian DalBalcon for his expert photography of the morning sessions and Nathan Blanchard, UWT Marketing and Communications for the group photo. Special mention to the IIGE team: Dr. Joanne Clarke Dillman, Sarah Newell, Liz Hunt, Janeil Engelstad, Dr. Jeremy Davis, and Dr. Divya McMillin for outstanding coordination and long hours of planning to make this a meaningful experience for all.
